    Can a Li-ion battery be based on half-cell open circuit voltages?

    We report a promising approach for on-line estimating the capacity of a Li-ion battery based on half-cell open circuit voltages (OCV). Capacity estimation of a rechargeable battery is especially challenging for those on-line applications where a full charge or discharge of the battery is not allowed.

    How do you test a battery capacity?

    By measuring the voltage across the battery, its remaining capacity can be preliminarily estimated. The constant current discharge method is a more accurate battery capacity test method. Connect the battery to a certain load and discharge it at a constant current until the battery voltage drops to the predetermined cut-off voltage.

    Can a half-cell OCV based approach be used to estimate Li-ion battery capacity?

    We demonstrated the on-line battery capacity estimations with a discharge pulse on aged commercial Li-ion cells and achieved accuracies within 1% error. The half-cell OCV based approach offers a new and effective technique for on-line capacity estimation of Li-ion batteries.

    How do you know if a battery has a capacity?

    The capacity corrected to 25°C is 88.7% and the battery passed the test. Failure to use K t results in a capacity calculation of 96.7%, an error of 8%. The only way to know the capacity of a battery is to perform a capacity test under specific test conditions. Tests should be conducted periodically based on the applicable IEEE recommended practice.
