A few years ago the cost of a solar photovoltaic panel system was R5/kWh compared to Eskom''s 50c/kWh. Solar power has now plummeted to R1/ kWh while Eskom has risen to R1.84/kWh – and keeps on rising. This drop in the price of solar power can be attributed to many factors such as a rise in demand and drop in production costs.

ABSTRACT: The challenge in solar energy today is not the cost of photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation, already competing with fossil fuel prices, but rather utility-scale energy storage and flexibility in supply. Low-cost thermal energy storage (TES) exists but relies on expensive heat engines. Here, we introduce the concept of luminescent

Between 2022 and 2023, utility-scale solar PV projects showed the most significant decrease (by 12%). For newly commissioned onshore wind projects, the global weighted average LCOE fell by 3% year-on-year; whilst for offshore wind, the cost of electricity of new projects decreased by 7% compared to 2022.
Yet, soft costs — the non-hardware expenses for solar PV installations, such as connection and permit fees — have represented a growing share of total costs, even as solar PVs have become more widespread and affordable. The mechanisms underlying the changes in soft costs over time remain not fully understood.
