DisMantleBot is a cutting-edge modular robotic system designed for the efficient and precise dismantling of Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries. DisMantleBot determines the optimal disassembly level—complete or partial—based on battery grades and selects the appropriate disassembly methods, such as separation and cutting.

The design of the disassembly system must consider the analysis of potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX) 1 of the area around the battery pack and, if necessary, adopt tools enabled to work in the corresponding ATEX zone.
In, authors identified the four mandatory tasks: handling, separation, clamping, and monitoring to pursue the disassembly of the battery pack into modules. The robot needs at least one tool for each listed task. Several works analysed the disassembly, proposing the design of specific disassembly tools.
As identified in various studies, a key obstacle is the significant variation in battery pack designs, which complicates the automation process . Manually dismantling EVB necessitates employing highly skilled workers and implementing stringent safety protocols, escalating costs, as noted by Harper et al. in their 2019 study on recycling.
Disassembly allows the battery cells to be separated from the other structural and connecting components for the subsequent processes, and is desirable for maintaining the high quality of the recovered raw materials. Disassembly is only viable if components can be separated without excessive costs or risks.
